Academic Camps

  • We want to hear from you. Parents of students in kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to participate in a Future CTE Programming Interest Survey to let us know what kind of camps your child may like to attend.
     



    ACT/SAT Prep
    Who: 2018-19 Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
    Where: B.R. Johnson Career and Tech Center
    Cost: Free

    SAT Reading, June 4-7, Mon.-Thurs. 9-11 a.m.
    SAT Writing/Language, June 11-14, Mon.-Thurs. 9-11 a.m.
    SAT Math, June 18-21, Mon.-Thurs. 9-11 a.m. 
    REGISTER

    These camps will teach students what they need to know about these tests as well as how to strategically use district resources to help prepare and build capacities. The higher the score on the SAT/ACT, the more choices one has for college admission and the more scholarship money one may receive.



    Baking Buddies

    Who: 4th-8th graders
    Where: B.R. Johnson Career and Tech Center
    Cost: $15
    Date and time: June 4-7 Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
    REGISTER

    Students start by learning the basics of measuring with a no bake cookie.  Students advance through chocolate chip cookies, yeast breads, and pretzels.  The course finishes with baking and icing cupcakes.



    Camp Connect - Algebra Readiness
    Who: 2018-19 8th Graders
    Where: B.R. Johnson Career and Tech Center
    Cost: Free
    Date and time: June 11-21, Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

    This camp is for incoming 8th grade students and offers a hands-on, interactive approach to prepare for Algebra I



    Fine Arts Camp
    Who: Current Kindergarten-Fifth Grade students
    Where: S.H. Crowley Intermediate School
    Cost: $150
    Date and time: June 11-15, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

    Get up and get moving for some fun-filled activities at the Fine Arts Camp. Each participant will attend a total of 6 classes per day: Art, Percussion, Music/Choir, and Theater will be for all students with a morning choice between cheer and video/photo and an afternoon choice between dance and computer applications. Free breakfast will be served and a free lunch will be provided. Each camper will receive a T-shirt to wear during camp.



    GATE Think Tank
    Who: 4th-6th graders identified as gifted and talented
    Where: B.R. Johnson Career and Tech Center
    Cost: Free
    Date and time: June 4-7, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
    REGISTER

    Join us for fun-filled, brain stretching activities at GATE Camp Think Tank.  Each participant will attend three of the seven courses offered: STEM Summer Fun, Coding, Robotics & Circuits, Kids in the Kitchen, Claymation Station, Sign Language, Future Engineers, Art Attack, Think Tank Arcade.
     


    Health Science Camp
    Who: 6th-6th graders
    Where: B.R. Johnson Career and Tech Center
    Cost: $10

    Learn how to monitor the vital signs of patients, practice in a professional setting, and earn your CPR certification through fun and engaging activities.


     
    Law Enforcement Camp
    Who: 4th-8th graders
    Where: B.R. Johnson Career and Tech Center
    Cost: $5
    Date and time: June 4-7 Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

    Students will be able to conduct the following law enforcement activities:
       • Traffic Stops: How police officers perform a safe and effective traffic stop
       • Building Search: How police officers effectively communicate and search a building
       • Texas Penal Code: How to determine how serious a crime is and describe the elements of a crime
       • Handcuffing: How to arrest a suspect
       • Mock Trial: Learn the role and responsibilities of members of the court



    Shutterbugs Photography Camp
    Who: 6th-8th graders
    Where: B.R. Johnson Career and Tech Center
    Cost: $15
    Date and time: June 4-7 Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
    REGISTER

    Learn basics of digital photography using DSLRs, including composition, lighting, printing and editing. Learn how to setup a background, studio lights, and a printer to produce "event photography" style prints like you see at a photo booth at an event.

    Hands-on Adobe Photoshop projects including: 
       • You Are the Giant Movie Monster: Lessons in green screen and editing
       • Alien-ize Yourself: Learn how to use Adobe Photoshop's amazing Liquify Edit Tool
       • BIG WORLD, small details: Macro Photography
       • Animal/Pet Photography: Collaboration with a local animal shelter to capture high-quality images for their website


    Video Camp
    Who: 7th-8th graders
    Where: B.R. Johnson Career and Tech Center
    Cost: $10
    Date and time: June 4-7 Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
    REGISTER

    With a hands-on approach we will be learning how to use professional level DSLR cameras and Adobe Premiere editing software to create commercials and short sketches. We can also create content for student’s YouTube accounts if they so choose. Any videos created will be uploaded to YouTube for the students to show their friends and family. All the equipment needed to participate will be provided.
